Careers in Science: Forensic Scientist

Think about the faces sitting in your classroom each day. Are you envisioning them? How many of them know the types of careers available to them? Probably most of them don’t. And career exploration isn’t something that should wait until college to happen. College is when they should select a career but they should be exposed to a variety of careers before that. Careers that make them curious and want to know more, and careers that make them say, “That’s definitely not for me!”

There are so many future jobs that our kids will hold that relate to science. As science teachers, it’s our job to help them see the potential now. To help them explore what a job might look like To help them scrutinize their passions, their strengths, their weaknesses.

This is our third installment of the Careers in Science series. We’ve covered the job duties of a meteorologist and a nutritionist.

How should you use this in your classroom? There’s really not a wrong way to go about it, but here are some suggestions.
-You could incorporate a Careers in Science assignment for the whole class when it directly relates
to the unit you’re covering.
-You can allow your early finishers to tackle this as an additional assignment.
-If you teach multiple class periods and one gets ahead of the other, you can assign this to fill in the
time. Many students enjoy this assignment and will welcome the research.

Other ideas? We’d love to hear how you’re using it, because there’s a good chance another teacher would love to follow your lead!

For this current installment, we’re allowing students to examine a forensic scientist’s job description. Have you ever used ScienceBuddies.org? It’s a website set up specifically to help students understand a variety of different careers. Everything in this series is also designed to help students learn how to research online. In an effort to get away from spoon-feeding, your students will have to read the tabs on the website and learn where to find information. Keep in mind, you know your students better than anyone so you choose how much direction you give them.
